Hand-sculpted from polymer clay without the use of molds, and carefully hand-painted, this unique dolphin pendant is mounted on an adjustable-length necklace and ready to wear! Every detail of this adorable dolphin and her prosthetic tail have been faithfully recreated to provide the best likeness possible. Her prosthetic fluke has been carefully detailed to include the gel “sock”, created here using PVA glue. This pendant has been given several coats of gloss varnish to protect the paint, and give it a wet appearance. It is mounted on 1mm black waxed-cotton cord, and tied with slip knots so that the length is adjustable. Her name is written on the back of the necklace in metallic blue paint.
A great keepsake for fans of the Winter, the movie “Dolphin Tale”, or anyone who loves dolphins!
About Winter:
Winter is an inspiration to people all over the world. She was found off the Florida coast on December 17, 2006, having been entangled in a crab trap (believed to have been only three months old at the time). She was caught and brought to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. She survived, but her tail had to be amputated because the rope from the crab trap had cut off the blood supply for a prolonged period of time. She learned to swim without her tail, but she had to do so using an atypical side-to-side motion, which veterinarians feared would cause damage to her spine. Kevin Carroll had designed prosthetics for other animals, and volunteered to help. After a year and a half, Carroll and a team of experts had created a prosthetic tail from silicone and plastic. Lessons learned while creating her prosthetic have been applied to human amputees. Although the odds were stacked against her, she surpassed expectations and is thriving. Her story was adapted for film, released as “Dolphin Tale” in 2011. People travel from all over the world to see her, inspired by her story.
