Painted Polymer Clay Keiko Fluke

Hand-sculpted from polymer clay without the use of molds, and carefully hand-painted, this unique fluke is mounted on a necklace and ready to wear! Every detail has been faithfully recreated to provide the best likeness possible, including the curved shape. It is strung on 1mm black waxed-cotton cord, and tied with slip knots so that the length is adjustable. I've given this pendant several coats of gloss varnish to protect the paint, and give it a wet appearance. His name is written on the back.

About Keiko:
Likely the most famous killer whale of all time, Keiko was captured near Iceland in 1979 and brought to an Icelandic aquarium. He was moved to Marineland, Canada three years later before moving to Reino Aventura in Mexico City. In 1993 he became an international sensation as the title character in the movie “Free Willy”. As a result of this unique stardom, a foundation was established to raise money for his rehabilitation and move back into the ocean. A special pool was constructed for him at the Oregon Coast Aquarium and he moved there in 1996. In 1998 he was flown to Klettsvik Bay in Iceland where he lived in a sea pen that allowed him supervised access to the open ocean. During a supervised “walk” in 2002, his trainers lost track of him and he turned up 870 miles away off the coast of Norway where he frolicked with fans. He had lost weight, and his trainers relocated so that they could continue to feed and care for him. His trainers hoped that he would join a passing pod of orcas, but this did not happen. He remained in human care until his death of pneumonia in 2003 around the age of 27. A memorial service was held on February 20, 2004, which was attended by 700 people and a memorial site was set up in Halsa, Norway, marked by a cairn of stones built by Norwegian school children. Thomas Chatterton said that “Keiko was not one of our kind but nonetheless, was still one of us”.
